Morning in the Grotto, is a finalist in the Contemporary category.
Morning in the Grotto, 2026, Oil and ink on canvas, 71 × 51cm
Morning in the Grotto forms part of my body of work reflecting on poet Louise Gluck’s line about memory and perception: “We see the world once, in childhood, the rest is memory.” Using a mix of oil painting and printmaking processes, some of which mimic natural forces, I want to evoke a visceral connection between us and the natural world. Looking up, down and into this sunlit waterhole in a place close to my heart, the viewer will, I hope, feel a sense of shifting perspective, of immersion in the physical world. It’s a little disorienting, yet somehow familiar.
